Stay updated on the latest earthquakes in Italy and view them on a map along with active faults and the map of Italian seismic hazard. Verify the population affected (within 20 km from the epicenter), the distance from your home, and the instrumental duration of the shocks. Share on Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp, or via email or SMS. Search earthquakes that have occurred since the year 1000. Always keep an eye on the widget with the map of the latest events (may not work if the app is moved to an SD card). See how seismic sequences unfolded. Receive notifications for new shocks and automatically update the list when the application is inactive. Occasionally, very strong earthquakes occurring in other parts of the world but detected by Italian instruments may be included in the list. The data is collected from the website of the National Institute of Geophysics, which publishes it at least 15/30 minutes after the shock.
Frequently Asked Questions:
1) Why am I not receiving notifications for new shocks?
Increasingly, Android phones have energy-saving systems that put applications into "hibernation". To correctly receive notifications, you must ensure that Terremoti Italia is not listed among those to be "hibernated".
2) Why is my widget not working anymore?
You have probably moved the application to an SD card. Android does not allow widgets of apps located on SD cards to function.
3) Sometimes alerts do not arrive or arrive late.
If the application is moved to an SD card, there may be malfunctions when the SD card is unmounted.
4) When I open the map, the application crashes.
There are some Android devices on the market with a flaw in Google's map visualization software. If you encounter this problem with other applications as well, it may be due to this issue. For example, problems have been found with Wiko devices running Android 4.2, and they can be resolved by updating to the next version of Android 4.4.
5) Why is there a half-hour delay between the shock and the alert in the application?
There is a minimum delay with which INGV publishes the data. Currently, there are no faster sources. Sometimes the delay may increase (1 hour), but rarely does it decrease.
6) The application would be more useful if it provided the alert BEFORE the shock. Is this possible?
It sounds like a joke, but this question is occasionally asked (even among the app's comments). Unfortunately, scientific knowledge currently does not allow us to predict the time and place of earthquakes. However, in Italy, we are at the forefront of research in this field and we know very well which areas are at the highest risk and where construction must be done with due caution!
7) Why is the reported time different from that on the INGV website?
The time on the INGV website is in Greenwich Mean Time without daylight saving time. However, the application displays the correct time based on your phone's settings (+2 in Italy with daylight saving time).
8) Could a filter be added for locations of interest?
Locations are added by INGV technicians and may not follow a well-defined convention. However, there is a distance-based filter and the display of shock distances available.
9) Can we have a longer history?
The history is based on data from the Italian Seismic Bulletin dating back to 2002 and a historical database with data going back to the year 1000.
10) What do earthquakes from other countries have to do with it?
In some cases, INGV also includes these earthquakes, presumably because they are of significant intensity and were detected by us as well.
11) When I open the map, the app crashes.
There are some devices on the market with poorly made ROMs that cause apps using Google maps (except Google Maps itself) to malfunction. One example is the Mediacom 715 (first version).
12) In what scale is the magnitude expressed?
Richter scale.
